Miami, FL – In a video released today Carlos Curbelo, like Donald Trump, uses the mass shooting in Orlando to attack the President on his foreign policy. Like Trump, Curbelo insists that it is radical Islam that is the root of our troubles, even though the overwhelming majority of the mass shootings in the U.S. have had no connection to Islam whatsoever.
In his video on the Orlando tragedy, Curbelo criticizes the President for failing to use the words "radical Islam," but Rep Curbelo fails to use the words Sandy Hook, Blacksburg, Aurora, and Charleston; most likely because they don't fit his pro-NRA narrative.
“Curbelo’s dismissive rhetoric is nothing short of irresponsible,” said Joe Garcia, candidate for Florida’s 26th Congressional District. “While he wants to talk about the Middle East, his record on keeping us safe from mass shootings here at home is deplorable. By opposing every responsible gun law presented to him in Congress, Rep. Curbelo has refused to listen to the public who overwhelmingly support responsible gun control measures that would help protect our families. We need a new Congress that will work to solve real problems, not play politics with lives.”
Curbelo is a gun lobby darling. This week when asked if Orlando changed his mind on gun control, he responded that new gun laws don't "make sense".
Curbelo has opposed expanding background checks to include people on the terror watch list. He has also received $15,650 in campaign donations from the NRA (including $4,950 in 2014 and $2,500 in 2016) and has near perfect legislative scores from both the NRA and Gun Owners of America. As a School Board Member, Curbelo even voted against legislation to keep guns out of classrooms, calling it a "waste of political capital."
