Joe Garcia reemphasizes his long time commitment to equal rights for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community
Miami, FL- Today, Former Congressman and Vice-Chair of the LGBT Equality Caucus Joe Garcia issued a statement in honor of LGBT Pride Month:
“This month we celebrate the strides we have made towards full equality for the LGBTIQ community,” said Joe Garcia, candidate for Florida’s 26th Congressional District. “We have much to celebrate this year in the wake of the supreme court decision. Together, we fought back attempts across the country and here in Florida that kept loved ones from marrying each other. However, our work is not done until LGBT employees can work without fear of being fired over who they choose to love. Nor is it done until ANY person can apply for housing or go to a restaurant without fear of being turned away. I am, and always have been, a strong advocate for equal rights for EVERYONE and believe that no one should be discriminated against based on who they love.”
Joe Garcia was awarded the Champions of Equality Award by SAVE for being a tireless advocate for equality. Garcia cosponsored legislation to eliminate LGBT discrimination in the workplace, in immigration law, and in adoption proceedings. Garcia also cosponsored legislation to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), and signed an amicus brief calling on the Supreme Court to strike down DOMA. He helped pass the bipartisan reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act, which extends protections to members of the LGBT community.
