Miami, FL- Former Congressman Joe Garcia issued a statement in support of a discharge petition filed by House Democrats today to bring President Obama’s $1.9 Billion Zika funding request to a floor vote:
“While Republicans in Congress argue about spending cuts, the health risk to our families continues to grow,” said Joe Garcia, candidate for Florida’s 26th Congressional District. “I support the President’s full $1.9 Billion plan to stop Zika and call on Congress to support this petition and give South Florida the help it desperately needs.”
South Florida is especially in need of urgent action. Florida’s 206 cases account for over 27% of all reported U.S. Zika infections. Miami Dade County itself accounts for a quarter of the state’s total cases.
If successful, the petition would bring the $1.9 Billion funding bill to a vote before the July 4th Recess. House Republicans, including Carlos Curbelo's ally Speaker Paul Ryan, have consistently refused to properly fund the fight against Zika. Instead, Republicans tried to pass a bill that would provide only a third of the necessary funding while cutting resources used to fight other diseases.
